India, photovoltaic module production capacity will reach 60GW

A latest report from rating agency ICRA said that India's solar module production capacity will rise to 60GW by 2025.

This is in sharp contrast to India’s current capacity of about 37GW. According to the report, the growth of local solar modules may be due to the strengthening of backward integration of silicon wafers and solar cells.

The Indian government is considering strengthening the Module Manufacturers Approval List scheme for Indian solar module manufacturers.

Union Power Minister RK Singh recently announced that the government will soon allow only those Indian module manufacturers that can produce solar cells locally to obtain authorization.

The ICRA report said that policy support provided by schemes and measures such as Capacity Linked Subsidy (PLI), Approved Model and Manufacturer List (ALMM), and Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on imported solar cells and modules of foreign origin will promote domestic solar modules in India. Development of manufacturing industry.

The report predicts that the backward integration of solar module production processes will enhance local production capacity in the next three years. According to the report, India's solar cell production capacity will increase from the existing 6GW to 25GW by 2025. However, researchers believe that it may take a long time for polysilicon, the main raw material for the production of solar cells, to enter the Indian market, which will lead to Indian manufacturers being dependent on foreign companies for polysilicon supply.

Solar module manufacturers also claim that India cannot achieve true "self-reliance" unless backward integration of local production capacity is ensured.

Rahul Bhutiani, chief marketing officer of Adani Solar, said in a recent interview with Saur Energy that Adani Solar will become one of the few Indian companies to start producing solar cells, silicon wafers, silicon ingots and even polysilicon. This is to ensure that India A complete component manufacturer ecosystem will be formed in 2027.

Others claim that solar cell production in India still faces challenges. Shravan Gupta, managing director of Surat-based module manufacturer Cosmic PV, told Saur Energy that currently only a few companies are manufacturing solar cells locally.

"There are only a few companies producing solar cells in India, and many of them are produced for their own use. Only a few sell them on the open market," he said.
