Recently, according to foreign media reports, General Motors plans to build two electric vehicle lithium-ion battery super factories in the United States to increase battery production capacity. According to the news, there are already two battery factories under construction. In addition to the newly announced two factories, General Motors will have four battery factories in the future, and the annual production capacity is expected to exceed 100GWh.

GM currently has two battery plants under construction, and the first plant in Lordstown, Ohio has started construction in May 2020. This plant is a joint venture between General Motors and LG Chemical, with a total investment of US$2.3 billion. The plant has a target annual production capacity of 30GWh and is expected to start production in 2022. The second plant currently under construction is located in Spring Hill, Tennessee. It is also a joint venture between LG Chem and General Motors, with an investment of US$2.3 billion and providing 1,300 jobs.

The plant has started construction on April 16 this year and is expected to start production in 2023, with an estimated annual production capacity of about 30GWh. The construction of multiple battery factories is for GM's ambitious sales target. According to GM's latest electrification plan, it will achieve the goal of global sales of 1 million electric vehicles every year in 2025. And plans to increase the investment of 8 billion yuan in electric vehicles and autonomous driving technology from 2020 to 2025, the total investment will reach 35 billion U.S. dollars, and the two new battery factories to be built will also be included in the investment. In addition to battery factories, GM will launch a total of more than 30 pure electric vehicles in North America and China by 2025. Not only that, GM also wants to surpass Tesla in North America and seize a larger share of the electric vehicle market.
